These young men welcoming people to the inauguration were largely ignored by the crowds of Trump supporters

Many planned to capitalize on the event to make a quick buck

Far more came to protest his inauguration

Some didn't comment on Trump, but wished to capitalize on the media storm

MAGA hats weren't as common of a sight as expected

Caricatures of the 45th President were everywhere

Trump, himself, was not the only subject of criticism

We had heard that Protesters were getting arrested

Lines of riot police had formed throughout the city

People were getting injured very early in the day, and the medics already had their work cut out of them

At 12th and L. The building to the right was where a group of protesters had become pinned down and encircled

Alex Rubinstein of RT America being arrested along with the protesters. Rubinstein was clearly marked as a journalist since he was wearing a jacket with the RT America logo on it

The protesters had their hands zip-tied before being thrown into the back of vans

Met up with a much larger protest. There were many views being expressed, but socialists were a large portion of the crowd

Black Lives Matter protesters also made up a large portion of the crowd

Many Green Party members were also in attendance

It seemed very well organized at first

Unfortunately they kept making wrong turns into active traffic. Many of the commuters were supportive, and started sitting on their car doors waving signs

Eventually they found their way again

The route, however, led right past 12th and L

Where many of the protesters were still being arrested

The large group was still encircled by riot police

These individuals had not been charged, but were not free to go

The Police usually refused to acknowledge the protesters question

A large group of protesters began to encircle the Police

The Intersection became more and more heated

Vermin Supreme, and other internet celebrities began to appear among the crowd

I cut around the crowd to get a better look at the encircled section of protesters

A group of Trump supporters pushed their way into the protest and began shoving people

Someone threw a water bottle and the mace came out

The section of protesters I happened to be around was rushed

Initially pinned against the wall, we heard an order to allow everyone to disperse

Someone next to me asked if they could be allowed to return to the park side of the intersection

The fact that they slowed down appeared to rationalize their being snagged and pulled away

We turned the corner to the sounds of screaming

The Police had been continuing to spray mace into the crowd despite them fleeing the scene

Many officers began yelling at one another trying to figure out why the mace had been used

Screams of, "Medic!" filled the air. Many of the elderly and some children had been hit

Then the masks came on. Concrete blocks where smashed from the sidewalk, and thrown into the police line in retaliation

Many members of the military who had found themselves in the way of the riot police stood at what they believed would be a safe distance

The riot police had cleared a section of street, but now seemed unsure of how to proceed

Rather than pushing forward they formed a firing line of mace and pepper spray (in paintball guns)

Then the stun grenades began to go off

Some of which were being thrown back at the police before detonating

Tear gas grenades were also being used, as the protesters began building barracades

The echos of the stun grenades was constant, and you could have felt the explosions from quite a distance

Some cameramen tried to get shots of things being thrown at the police, and were maced immediately

The smell of tear gas was starting to build up in the intersection

A stun grenade had been thrown just past this man

The stun grenade went off in the faces of the rioters who had barricaded themselves across from the police line

Many began to take passive stances to try and deescalate the situation

At this moment, the officer in blue threw a stun grenade directly at myself and a fellow photographer

Unfortunately I was watching the officers in reflective vests, and hadn't even seen the office in blue

Those of us that had been farther up began to fall back

Only a few pushed forward
